THE demolition of a number of derelict buildings on Carrickmore’s Main Street over the weekend is the start a new era of regeneration for the town according to the local developer behind the move.
Luke Daly, who now plans to build a new 40 bed nursing home on the site as part of a new joint commercial and residential development in the town told the Ulster Herald, “The town has been starved of development in recent decades.”
Carrickmore has suffered from a series of derelict buildings which have stood empty in the centre of the town for years and which local people have branded as “eyesores.”
Speaking after a demolition team moved in early on Saturday morning to tear down a number of the derelict buildings on Main Street, the developer said, “This is a proud and dynamic community and the people will not tolerate the town centre being reduced to the dark ages.”
Planning permission had originally been obtained to develop the site as far back as 2003, however it’s only recently that the required demolition project could go ahead, granting access to the site, after the dilapidated buildings on Main Street were vacated.
“The property has been derelict for a long-time, it has been an eyesore in the town,” said Mr Daly. “The reaction has been massively positive, local people are over the moon.”
